The Centre for Low Carbon Futures (CLCF) is a collaborative research centre that focuses on the evidence base and demonstration of low carbon innovations. It was formed by the Universities of Hull, Leeds, Sheffield and York. Read how Shaping Cloud helped them deliver a ground breaking project.

Shaping Cloud and the Centre for Low Carbon Futures

Shaping Cloud was approached by the University of Sheffield to develop a web based application for the CLCF that would help businesses map out their existing supply chains. The tool would then run an analysis of their chain and present them with a carbon 'heat-map' showing them where the most carbon is being used. They would then be given recommendations for reducing their carbon footprint based upon their own research initiatives and real world case studies.

The Solution

Building on top of the Microsoft Windows Azure platform Shaping Cloud developed two systems using ASP.Net MVC3, JQuery, HTML 5 and Backbone JS:

  • System Knowledge-base - The database is designed to collate and store data which can later be used for research. This content management system allows the researchers to update information, upload findings and case studies to share their research.
  • Carbon Calculator - The Carbon Calculator enables businesses to locate their carbon hotspots by mapping out their existing supply chain using a web-based interface. The system then uses this data to link results to a similar supply chain which has successfully reduced its carbon. The business can then follow these guidelines to reduce their own carbon emissions.

The application will then make suggestions on how to reduce carbon emissions and link users to an extensive 'interventions database' - a collection of research gathered by the team that includes data collected from organisations that have already implemented the interventions. The tool is designed to grow over time as more data is entered.
